Sermon 4: God's Ten Commandments - The First Commandment
Ten laws from God were set in stone. Ten laws that God has commanded us to follow. These are the ten laws we must obey in order to stay on the path that leads to Heaven.
These ten laws have needed no amendments, no additions and no repeals. These ten laws were truly revealed to Moses by God.
God’s First Commandment
I AM THE LORD THY GOD, WHO HAVE BROUGHT THEE OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT, OUT OF THE HOUSE OF SLAVERY.
THOU SHALT HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME.
This commandment teaches us all we need to know about God, from God Himself. No one else can do what God can do. No one else has done what God has done.
God reveals these Commandments after delivering the masses out of harsh slavery in Egypt and proves that Moses was correct about the power of God. No amount of arms can defeat His unarmed believers, no amount of money can buy the soul of His non-wealthy believers, no human power can overcome the power of His love for His believers. He proves that the people who were not worshipping God directly were not on the right path to Heaven. God taught the Egyptians a hard lesson about love – the love of God, the love of other people, and the love of God for His creations.
Humanity, all of whom must spend their time on earth learning that faith, trust and love is more important than knowledge, needed a message from God so that humanity could survive. God loves us so much that He stepped in to give us these laws that we truly needed then and still need to this day.
No matter what else someone tells you about where to draw your strength and guidance from (even benign things like trusting in luck and such), you are to know that God is your one source of strength and guidance. God is the Creator of All and God is to be appreciated and obeyed.
This is because God has set you on a path to Everlasting Joy and, during your life on earth, He commands you to develop the characteristics necessary for your continued journey to Heaven (tolerance, patience, etc.) by following the directions God gives you. You must “tune in” to God and be alert to the signs God gives you during your lifetime.
The path to Heaven contains these lessons and learning those lessons quickly will help to smooth out the “bumps” in your path.
God does not want you to be distracted from these lessons and make things harder on yourself. You will receive greater joy on earth if you are aware of your purpose here, so the answer is easy. FOLLOW GOD.
Belief in God is truly the time to put all your eggs in one basket. You may never understand anything about Him but His love for you, and that is enough.
