Sermon 9: God’s Commandments – The Sixth Commandment
Ten laws from God were set in stone. Ten laws that God has commanded us to follow. These are the ten laws we must obey in order to stay on the path that leads to Heaven.
These ten laws have needed no amendments, no additions and no repeals. These ten laws were truly revealed to Moses by God.
God's Sixth Commandment
THOU SHALT NOT KILL.
This four word commandment is paradoxical in that it is much more complicated than it appears and yet is still as incredibly simple as it looks.
What makes this commandment incredibly simple is that it clearly conveys God’s purpose. Love life. God created our very existence out of His love. He has set us on a course of, first, an earthly life of learning, so that we can accept His ultimate gift of everlasting happiness in the paradise of Heaven. He loves His creations and He desires for humanity to continue. So, one of God’s commandments to us is to treat all life as important because it is God’s creation, it is God’s will. Do not destroy life.
Pretty easy, huh? Well, not so much. What makes it complicated is the fact that, in a literal sense, humans do kill. And reasons for killing vary and are not always clear-cut and obvious. But we have guidance from God in this regard.
We are important in God’s eyes. So important that everything you experience comes directly to you from God. And He loves you, and He wants you to join Him in Heaven’s paradise. So, we can be sure that one part of this commandment means that we must take care of ourselves. And our body is what we are given to carry us through earth’s important journey. What is right to do for God is to treat your body with the utmost respect – do nothing that promotes death to the cells that make up your body. Keep your body fed with the nutrients it needs and protect it.
So, when it comes to a choice of killing an animal or plant for vital food or protective clothing so that our body does not die, we choose our body’s needs. If our life is threatened, God has proven to us, through the discovery of our survival instinct, that we should protect ourselves, even if we must kill to do so. If the survival of humanity or the universe is threatened, we uphold God’s commandment by not taking our lives for granted and doing something about it. And, when it comes to a choice of treating a situation with positive emotions like tolerance and patience, rather than overreacting out of fear, anger or selfishness, we must protect our bodies by eliminating the negative thinking that leads to unhealthy bodily stress.
This commandment lets us know how high God values our life, and therefore, all life. So, we understand that we must also not take other’s lives for granted by promoting or contributing to death in unneeded ways – death of a vital natural resource, death of a race or a nation of people, or the death of any species. God gave us the earth we inhabit before the Heavens – it is our duty to keep it and all of us alive.
Promote life. Live and let live. God wants you to be responsible for this. In fact, He commands it.
